Processing and Printing B&W Prints

College this evening we developed the B&W films we shot last week. In groups of three we rolled the film onto a reel and placed it into a Developer Tank (pic on left) this was done in complete darkness. When feeding the film onto the reel you must be careful not to touch the front and back part's of the film, not to damage it. Once we had sealed the roll in the light proof tank we were able to put the lights on. We then poured in developer solution and water 1:1 200ml of each, the water must be 21º. We then agitated for 10 sec every min for 13 min in total. Next step we emptied the developer and replaced it with stop bath and Water ratio 1:1. we then agitated for 10secs and after a min we emptied the stop bath away. This was replaced with fixer solution 400ml still agitating every min for 10secs and 5min in total. To finish off we run clean water over the film roll for about 20 min, to wash away all the solutions. All that is left to do is to hang the roll and leave it to dry. Once the film had dried it was ready to be cut and placed into sleeves.
Overall I would like to do more film photography and practice developing the rolls I have used, as I really enjoyed the whole process from start to finish. Instead of just clicking ok on a computer to print the photography out, this way you can appreciate the work which has gone into developing the image as well as taking the photo.

Taking Photos in the Studio using B&W film

PictureNikon SLR, B&W Film.
This evening in college we got to shoot in the studio using SLR's with Black and White film (left pic).  We all fetched in items to shoot, I used Domino's (not the pizza) and to finish off we all took turns in taking pictures of a Guitar.  With our item we had to take photos and try and capture 5 elements weight, shape, texture, tone and size in the photo. I used the Nikon with a 50mmm fixed focal lens. Using the fixed focal lens I had to move back and fore as well as adjust the focus to get a shape image. I found that moving back and fore instead of twisting the lens to zoom more hands on. This was the first time in a studio taking photo's and in a week or two we are going to process the film and develop the prints. I'm looking forward to using the darkroom as this is all new and exciting stuff.

PictureEnlarger.
In college this evening we made Photograms (pic to the left) using an enlarger to make images of items that we all fetched in. I brought in a pair of sunglasses and a Ipod. We set the aperture to 50% and exposed each item to about 8sec of light. The items we place on top of Light Sensitive Paper in the darkroom. We then developed the images using Developer, Stop Bath, Fixer and Water Bath. We transferred the paper between each tray with tongs not to get any of the chemicals onto our skin. We then dried the paper using a dryer. This was made famous by Henry Fox Talbot who experimented by making botanical specimens and lace on top of light sensitive materials in a painting frame, exposing this to light and then washing out the unexposed  light sensitive material.
